What do you think of the first novel of Saul Bellow? Could you give me an overview of it?

Saul Bellow's first novel, written in 1944, "Dangling Man" was supposed to be the book that made Saul Bellow be noticed by the reading public. Have you read it? Could you give me an overview or summary of the novel? My niece finds the book a bit dragging. Is it?
