Question about 1972 Summit Series - why wasn't Howe, Hull and Orr there?

Why wasn't Gordie Howe, Bobby Hull and Bobby Orr at the 1972 Summit Series? In the list of all-time greats, those three top many people's lists that would have been active at that time, including THN's top 100.
